ALTERATIONS IN THE MATERIALS OF DIANETICS AND SCIENTOLOGY

A NEW SLANT ON LIFE

Comparing 1972 edition (1976 reprint) copyrighted under L. Ron Hubbard [ISBN: 0-88404-013-5] to 2007 edition copyrighted under “L. Ron Hubbard Library” [ISBN: 978-1-4031-4686-1]

The story of A New Slant on Life is quite simple. As can be seen on the original description of this book, it contained “twenty-eight of the best-loved essays written by L. Ron Hubbard between 1950 and 1959.”

All one needs to do is to compare the table of contents to see the sort of “correction” that was done to this book (matching chapters are identified with matching letters):

“How to Study a Science” in 1972 was an adaptation of an article "How to Study Scientology" from Ability magazine, issue 90M (can be found in Volume 3 of The Technical Bulletins of Dianetics and Scientology). It closely correlates with “How to Study Scientology” chapter in 2007 which is itself an adaptation from the same article, and so it was counted in as a matching chapter.

Counting the remaining non-matching chapters in 1972, we can see that a whooping EIGHTEEN (18) chapters were dropped from the book including some of the chapters that are at the very core of the subject of Scientology – Knowledge, Communication, Confronting, Ability, Freedom and the mechanics of Entrapment – these concepts are at the very foundation of Scientology which aimed to quite literary give readers a new slant on life and a good understanding of the subject itself. Many of these dropped chapters are adaptations (shortened and/or simplified text) of more advanced and hard to find publications meaning that the simplified text aimed to reach raw public was unique to A New Slant on Life and is now lost. On the other hand, many of the chapters that were added to 2007 book in order to make up for the missing space come directly from other introductory books:

From Self-Analysis:
- On Our Efforts for Immortality
- On Raising Our Level of Consciousness

From The Fundamentals of Thought:
- The Eight Dynamics
- The Affinity, Reality and Communication Triangle

From Introduction to Scientology Ethics:
- The Anti-Social Personality
- The Social Personality
- The Third Party Law
- Ethics, Justice and the Dynamics

From Problems of Work:
- Handling the Confusions of the Workaday World

This leaves us with 5 unique chapters (not including the Introduction) that were added to the book:
- Personal Integrity
- A Description of Scientology
- A True Group
- What is Greatness?
- My Philosophy

Here is what was identified for the source of the eliminated chapters:
