ALTERATIONS IN THE MATERIALS OF DIANETICS AND SCIENTOLOGY

SELF-ANALYSIS

Comparing 1976 publication copyrighted under L. Ron Hubbard [ISBN: 0-88404-014-3] with 2007 edition copyrighted under “L. Ron Hubbard Library” [ISBN: 978-1-4031-4412-6]

David Miscavige's statements at the Basics release event in 2007:

Loading the player...

Self-Analysis was also published in 1951 within months of Science of Survival. In that regard, it is a companion to Science of Survival; and while I can also tell you that it too is a dictated book, transcribed almost simultaneously to Science of Survival, that only serves as evidence of the fact that every one of these scribes could have done the job right. Yes, there were a few errors in terms of paragraphs, emphasis of words, but content wise, Self-Analysis has been almost perfect from the date of its first publication which is not to say the way we have presented Self-Analysis in our new edition isn’t a dramatic upgrade and for very good reason. Specifically, there’s probably no more undervalued book in the entire LRH Library than Self-Analysis. And here is what I mean:

First, there is the fact that Self-Analysis follows the Science of Survival in chronological sequence. In that regard, it is also the next advance. In fact, in Science of Survival LRH previews a new type of processing – Positive Processing – and that processing is Self-Analysis. Second, and even more relevant, Self-Analysis was also written as an introductory beginning book meaning while it describes the many principles from both Dianetics and Science of Survival, it was written for the individual to be able to immediately experience Dianetics with Self-Analysis processing. But, while many of you already know that, here is a datum you might not know: If you were to enter the title of every single LRH book into the computer database containing all LRH materials: all books, bulletins, policies, lectures' transcripts, etc, you’d find an interesting fact - the book LRH most referred to in the many years to come was Self-Analysis. Why? Because, as he said, it contains the powerful process that can pull an individual out of most anything.

The book is also the basis of ARC Straight-wire and for those reasons and many more we’ve given Self-Analysis the respect it deserves with the layout that has never been more friendly or usable for those embarking on a journey of self-discovery.

Self-Analysis includes the most embracing description of unconsciousness and the means to undo it. Similarly, Self-Analysis contains the only test to plot oneself on the Tone Scale and the Chart of Human Evaluation. And considering the reader is being audited by LRH as the book describes, the layout of processing is to the level of standard tech. Then again and now that YOU know it’s important, it’s never been clear, and that’s YOUR route to knowledge. So there you have it – Self-Analysis.

You can see the full video of this event on the official Church of Scientology website at this address:

The segment about Self-Analysis starts at 1:05:43 time marker of the video.

So you heard it from David Miscavige: "...we’ve given Self-Analysis the respect it deserves with the layout that has never been more friendly or usable...."

Judge for yourself:

1976 Reprint 2007 Edition
8 x 5 1/8 x 11/16 (12.1 oz) 9 1/2 x 6 1/2 x 1 /18 (1 lb 15.2 oz)

THIS is a friendly layout. This looks like an ad for a horror film.

Perhaps some people would find bigger size lists more "usable," but there is a tradeoff in size and weight of the book. 1970's edition is practically weightless and very compact which makes it easy to have and carry around.

Alterations in Self-Analysis are nowhere near as extensive as in Science of Survival, but some things should be brought to light.

You've heard Miscavige list EMPHASIS OF WORDS in his list of general "errors" in Self-Analysis. What was ACTUALLY done is Ron Hubbard's emphasis of key terms was REMOVED to result in text that is LESS CLEAR:

In Chapter Three Ron Hubbard writes about Reason as one’s ability to think and its relationship to survival. Reason is then spelled with a capital letter throughout the chapter to highlight it as a key term in its specific definition. This term was de-capitalized in 2007 edition which effectively made Ron’s communication on this concept less clear. Example:

1976: 22 2007: 26
The elements fight Man and man fights man. The primary target of the enemies of Man or a man is his right and ability to reason. The crude and blundering forces of the elements, storms, cold and night bear down against, challenge and then mayhap crush the Reason as well as the body.

But just as unconsciousness always precedes death, even by instants, so does the death of Reason precede the death of the organism. And this action may happen in a long span of time, even half a lifetime, even more.

Words Life, Universe, and Survival were similarly spelled with a capital letter to highlight their significance as key terms as well as indicate to readers that the word Life, where it is spelled with a capital letter, refers to the force that animates living forms as opposed to other definitions of this word (see: http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/life). The impact of this "small" change on clarity of what is being communicated is quite significant. Example from Chapter Four:

1976: 26-27 2007: 34
Life could be said to be engaged upon a conquest of the physical universe. The primary urge of life has been said to be Survival. In order to accomplish Survival, Life has to continue and win in its conquest of the physical universe.

When Life or a Life form ceases to continue that conquest, it ceases to Survive and succumbs.

Here we have a gigantic action. The energy of Life vs. matter, energy, space and time.

Life vs. the physical universe.

Here is an enormous struggle. The chaotic, disorganized physical universe, capable only of force, resisting the conquest of Life, organizing and persistent, capable of Reason.

Life learns the laws of the physical universe matter, energy, space and time and then turns those laws against the physical universe to further its conquest.

Man has spent much time learning what he could of the physical universe as in the sciences of physics and chemistry but, more important even, of the daily battle of Life against the Universe. Do not think that a monocell does not manifest a knowledge of Life’s working rules, for it does. What cunning it takes to organize some chemicals and sunlight into a living unit! The biologist stands in awe of the expertness of management of the smallest living cells. He gazes at these intricate and careful entities, these microscopic units of Life forms, and even he cannot believe that it is all an accident.

Here are the rest of alterations in wording found in this book:

Self Analysis Alterations

1976: 15 2007: 8
All this is on your own responsibility. Anything as powerful as these processes can occasionally flare. If you are fairly stable mentally there is no real danger. But I will not mislead you. If you see somebody who isn’t quite as stable as he thinks he is working with Self Analysis, coax it away from him. If he can barely stand mental chicken broth, he has no right to be dining on raw meat. Send him to see a professional auditor. And even if he does throw a wheel, a professional auditor can straighten him out. Just send for an auditor. All this is on your own responsibility. Anything as powerful as these processes can occasionally flare. If you are fairly stable mentally, there is no real danger. But I will not mislead you. A man could go mad simply reading this book. If he can barely stand mental chicken broth, he has no right to be dining on raw meat. Send him to see a Dianetic auditor. And even if he does throw a wheel, a Dianetic auditor can straighten him out. Just send for an auditor.

[The added sentences results in a significant shift in meaning of this paragraph.]

1976: 16 2007: 9
To help you there is a two-sided disc in the back of the book. The directions are on page 60. To help you there is a two-sided disk in the back of the book.

[If you ever read 2007 book and went on "hunting" for more information about using the disk, you will be delighted to know that a page reference was included in the authentic edition of Self-Analysis. Apparently, whoever was "correcting" this book forgot to include an updated page reference after dropping the old one.]

1976: 17 2007: 14
Just now let’s talk about the general goal of all life. Knowing that, we can know something about the basic laws which motivate your own urges and behavior. Just now let's talk about the general goal of all life. From whence did we come and whither are we going? Knowing that, we can know something about the basic laws which motivate your own urges and behavior.

[Here again some sentence out of the blue convoluting the meaning and appearing to be completely out of place. The sentence about "we"  meaning the human beings  comes right after a sentence that places readers' attention on "the general goal of all life." It is highly doubtful that fish or insects wonder about their own origins to say nothing of plants and other forms of life.]

1976: 78 2007: 122
This section and almost every other section in these lists rehabilitates the sense of time. This section and almost every other section in these lists rehabilitate the sense of time.

[The verb “rehabilitates” goes with the word “section” which is singular and so the verb “rehabilitate” should end with an ‘s’ to agree with a singular subject.]

1976: 94 2007: 151
Most people are not emotional—they are mis-emotional, in that they do not react to the situations in their environment with the emotion which would be most rational to display. The social order has confused irrationality with emotionalism. Actually a person who is fully rational would be most able to respond to the stimulus of his environment. Being rational does not mean being cold and calculating. An individual who is rationally happy can be counted upon to make the best calculations. [Looks like someone was getting confused on what this paragraph was talking about.]

1976: 121 2007: 205
It is generally conceded that the opposite of to remember is to forget. People can easily become confused between these two things so that they forget what they think they should remember and remember what they think they should forget. The basic and underlying confusion between forget and remember has to do, evidently, with what has been forced on him or taken away from him in terms of matter, energy, space and time. [What is the source for the added phrase?]

On page 91, 2007 edition also has a few paragraphs differentiating between "Light Processing" as in this Self-Analysis book and "Deep Processing" as in auditing incidents containing physical and/or emotional pain. It goes on to state that:
"This book contains Light Processing. This book is not "self-auditing." "Self-auditing" is nearly impossible. In this book, the author, L. Ron Hubbard, is actually giving the reader Light Processing."

It would be interesting to know if Ron Hubbard himself ever referred to Self-Analysis as "Light Processing."

The LISTS were not changed except for a few cases:

1976: 87 2007: 136
41. A domestic sound.
42. A busy sound.
43. A pleasant sound.
41. A domestic sound.
42. A busy sound.
43. A pleasant noise

[Why oh why… Actually the reason it was changed most likely has to do with the fact that “A pleasant sound” already appeared in this list at number 3 so whoever was “correcting” this book must’ve decided that it should be something else so that there are no duplicates. “A pleasant noise” is obviously an oxymoron since the word “noise” already includes “unpleasant” in its very definition: “a sound, especially one that is loud or unpleasant or that causes disturbance.” (http://oxforddictionaries.com/us/definition/american_english/noise)]

1976: 131 2007: 223
59. You liked somebody who was black. 59. You liked somebody who was of another race.

1976: 144 2007: 251
401.        You discovered it wasn’t wrong.
402.        You did something wrong.
403.        You were complimented on writing and it turned out alright.
404.        You made somebody yell.

402.        You did something wrong and it turned out all right.
403.        You were complimented on writing.
404.        You made somebody yell.

Here is a change in the Stabilization process that David Miscavige emphasized in his speech:

1976: 174 2007: 307
This usually stabilizes any of the above conditions.
1.        Recall a time which really seems real to you.
2.        Recall a time when you felt real affinity for someone.
3.        Recall a time when someone was in good communication with you.
4.        Recall a time when you felt deep affinity for somebody else.

3.        Recall a time when someone was in good communication with you.
4.        Recall a time when you felt deep affinity for somebody else.
...

[It would help to see what it said in the very first edition of Self-Analysis, but it was not available for this review.]

1976 Self-Analysis does not contain a gigantic glossary at the end as does 2007, but it provides a list of concise definitions for terms specific to Dianetics. In 2007, these terms were integrated with 700 some words glossary where words unique to Dianetics were bolded for differentiation. Let’s compare the definitions provided for the same terms (1976 definitions are listed in the exact order they appear in 1976 publication, while 2007 definitions were picked out from the general alphabetized list of terms):

1976 DEFINITIONS 2007 Definitions (selected from Glossary)
REACTIVE MIND: That portion of a person’s mind which works on a stimulus-response basis (given a certain stimulus, it gives a certain response) which is not under his volitional control and which exerts force and the power of command over his awareness, purposes, thoughts, body and actions. It contains engrams, secondaries and locks. NO DEFINITION PROVIDED
ENGRAM: A mental image picture of an experience containing pain, unconsciousness, and a real or fancied threat to survival; it is a recording in the Reactive Mind of something which actually happened to an individual in the past and which contained pain and unconsciousness, both of which are recorded in the mental image picture called an engram. engrams: recordings of moments of pain and unconsciousness. These recordings can be later brought into play by a similar word or environment and cause the individual to act as though in the presence of danger. They force the individual into patterns of thinking and behavior which are not called for by a reasonable appraisal of the situation. A description of engrams and their relevance to Self Analysis is contained in Chapter Ten, Processing Section. The complete description of engrams is contained in Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and Science of Survival. Page 9.
SECONDARIES: Mental image pictures containing misemotion (encysted grief, anger, apathy, etc.) and a real or imagined loss. They contain no physical pain; they are moments of shock and stress depending for their force on earlier engrams which have been restimulated (activated) by the circumstances of the secondary. secondaries: moments of acute loss, as death of a loved one, called secondaries as they depend upon an earlier engram for their force on the individual. The subject of secondaries and their processing is contained in Science of Survival. Page 95.
LOCK: A mental image picture of a non-painful but disturbing experience the person has experienced and which depends for its force on an earlier secondary and engram which the experience has restimulated. lock(s): a moment of mental discomfort containing no physical pain and no great loss. A scolding, a social disgrace; such things are locks. Any case has thousands and thousands of locks. Page 96.
AUDITOR: A listener, or one who listens carefully to what people have to say. An auditor is a person trained and qualified in applying Dianetic and Scientology processes to others for their betterment. auditor: a person who administers Dianetics procedures to another; auditor means one who listens and computes. Page 5.
PRECLEAR: This term covers anyone who is not a Clear; however, it is principally used to describe a person who, through Scientology processing, is finding out more about himself and life. preclear: an individual entering upon and undergoing Dianetic Processing who is not yet a Clear. Page 95.
CLEAR : An individual who can be at cause knowingly and at will over mental matter, energy, space and time as regards the first dynamic (survival for self). The state of Clear is attained through an exact gradient of steps of processing and training in Scientology technology.
Clear: an unaberrated person. He is rational in that he forms the best possible solutions he can on the data he has and from his viewpoint. He is called a "Clear" because his basic personality, his self-determinism, his education and experience have been cleared of aberrative engrams, secondaries and locks. See Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health and Science of Survival. Page 72.

In Self-Analysis there are also numerous instances of breaking up sentences joined with a coordinating conjunction (and, or, but...), but there is no need to cover it here since this is something that was done in all of 2007 editions and has already been covered in great detail in Science of Survival Alteration Report.
